Nepal revolutionaries up the pressure

REVOLUTIONARIES in Nepal are upping the pressure on the government.

Sify news reports that almost 8,000 schools were forced to close by the All Nepal National Independent Students' Union (Revolutionary) in protest at fee hikes of up to 25 percent.

It adds: "The Maoist students went on the warpath, padlocking the accounts offices of private schools and on Friday, vandalising nearly a dozen school buses, demanding that the fees be rolled back.

"The student organisation has said it will not allow the schools to re-open till they revert to the old fee structures. "

The strike comes in the run-up to a massive workers' protest announced by the Maoists in the capital on May 1.
